Bill Talen was a lost idealist
spurred by the commercializa-
tion of his neighborhood and
inspired by sidewalk preachers
when he created the stage
persona of Reverend Billy and
the Church of Stop Shopping
in 1997. Performing with a
gospel choir and a live band,
Reverend Billy preaches a
broader message of economic
justice, fair trade, environmen-
tal protection and an end to the
“corporatization” of America.
Made possible by the generosity
of Dan W. Deitrich, Hamilton
Class of 1964.

If “esperanza” is the Spanish
word for hope, then bassist,
vocalist, and composer
Esperanza Spaulding could
not have been given a more
fitting name at birth. Blessed
with uncanny instrumental
chops and a multilingual voice
that is part angel and part
siren, this 23-year-old prodigy-
turned-pro might well be the
hope for the future of jazz
and instrumental music.
